¡Hello Everyone! After 1 year and a half studying biochemistry, I have realized that this career has a great contribution to the society and the world in which we live. From understanding how a cell works to the development of procedures that allow saving the life of a human being, an animal or directly the ecosystem in which we live. Studying biochemistry is not only about learning and memorizing certain biochemical processes, but also about the ability of scientists to understand and transmit this knowledge to the population based on world well-being. In this context, biochemistry can intervene in fields of medicine, pharmacology, scientific dissemination, ecology, among others. Personally, I see myself in a few years transmitting my scientific knowledge to the objective and non-objective population, being part of the advances and changes in science, specifically in the field of biomedicine, that arise every year always with the intention of ensuring a science that is used for th...

A SCIENTIST WHO I ADMIRE

Imagen
¡Hello Everyone! Today I will talk about a Chilean biochemist who I admire, his name is Ramón Latorre ( National Prize of Natural Sciences 2002).  Ramon Latorre is the director of the Valparaíso interdisciplinary neuroscience center. He was born in Santiago de Chile in 1941. He has done deep research and great work in the field of biophysics, specifically in the study of ion channels. He was part of a select group of scientists (such as Mario Luxoro, Eduardo Rojas, María Cecilia Hidalgo, among us others) who worked in the Montemar laboratory where very revolutionary and surprising findings were made in the field of molecular physiology. He is one of the most cited Chilean scientists in research worldwide and was the first to demonstrate the existence of so-called "ion channels" that led him to discover that women are protected against heart disease due to their cellular composition. I have deep admiration for him not only for his studies in ionic channels that I am currentl...

MY FAVORITE PICTURE

Imagen
¡Hello Everyone! Choosing a favorite photo among all the ones I have was very difficult but this was the winner: I took this picture on my last trip to southern Chile at Lake Pirihueico, Puerto Fuy in February 2021. I really like this picture because it represents the beauty of the landscapes of southern Chile characterized by abundant vegetation surrounding lakes and rivers. Personally, this is my favorite lake because I love the transparency of its water. I also love the surrounding landscape, where native trees, rivers and volcanoes stand out. The truth is that every time I travel to the south of Chile I take a similar photo, because I love the contrast that occurs between the water and the surrounding landscape which you can really appreciate in this picture. I hope in the future I can get to know all of the lakes and rivers of Chile, where I will surely photograph in the same way. I will be back with another blog soon, goodbye.

MY FAVORITE FOOD

Imagen
¡Hello Everyone! Like the last blog I comeback with another challenge for you. I will speak in this blog about a lot of features of my favorite food but i won’t say it’s name because I want you to guess. The origin of this food is very confusing, some people believe that it was created in China and others in Italy. The grace of this food is that it can be accompanied with infinite ingredients and it can be cooked as the chef likes best. Typically, they are cooked by placing them in boiling water between 7-10 minutes and then removed. This food brings back many memories of my childhood because usually when I came home from school or from playing soccer with my friends, my mother cooked it for me. Personally, I love eating them with tomato sauce, grated cheese, and meat. Like most carbohydrates, this food has to be consumed in a moderate way to be beneficial for health. To finish I would like to recommend this food when you are with your friends and they are very hungry a...

MY FAVORITE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY

Hello Everyone! Today i will have a challenge for you, i will speak in this blog about a lot of features of my favorite piece of technology but i won´t say it’s name because i want you to guess. Well, my uncle gave me the first one for my birthday when I was 11 or 12 years old, I don't remember exactly. I did not use it so much because at that time it did not have many functions, I could only listen to music and take photos (not in a very good quality). This object has 3 surface parts that are very important to recognize. A lock button, two buttons to raise and lower the volume and depending on the object there are buttons to exit the applications. Today, I use this object a lot, practically every day because it allows me to interact through social networks, communicate with my family and friends, learn about various topics, take photos, record videos, listen to music, watch exercise routines and I even use it as an alarm so I don't fall asleep in the morning. I thin...

WHY I CHOSE BIOCHEMESTRY?

Hello Everyone! Well, when was I child I wanted to be a Soccer Player. I grew up watching championships like the Champions League or the Premier League, motivating me to continue training so that I could one day play in them. Currently I still have that dream, in fact every time I listen to their anthem or watch a Champions League game I get excited and it makes me want to play soccer again. Over the years I began to like science, specifically biology and chemistry. I had the opportunity to participate in several scientific fairs that encouraged my desire to learn more about viruses, bacteria, plants and the human body and how they work. That is why, in my last year of school, I had 5 careers in mind: Medicine, Biology, Chemical Civil Engineering, Medical Technology and Biochemistry. Finally, I chose biochemistry because the course of the career covered a lot of content that I liked and interested me quite a lot. In addition, it was going to allow me to have knowledge about t...

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF MY

Imagen
Hello Everyone! My name is José Vásquez Reyes but all my family calls me “Coto”. I was born on october 16, 2001 in Santiago, Chile (so i will be waiting for some chocolates haha). Before entering university i studied at the Ruiz Tagle High School for eight years where I met my first Friends who are still with me today. I entered to study biochemistry at the University of Chile in 2020, just the year the pandemic started   so I have had online classes since then, it’s very sad.  I have a big family, we are ten brothes and sisters, four dogs and how can I forget, we have a duck called Lucas (the family's sweetheart but don't tell him because his ego will grow). I like to play   many sports but my favorites are Soccer and Volleyball, I really hope I am able to play both sports when return to university.   I also love to travel and want to get to know all the places in the world. In fact the last few years I have had the chance to travel around the south of Chile ...
