A SCIENTIST WHO I ADMIRE

¡Hello Everyone!

Today I will talk about a Chilean biochemist who I admire, his name is Ramón Latorre ( National Prize of Natural Sciences 2002).

Ramon Latorre is the director of the Valparaíso interdisciplinary neuroscience center. He was born in Santiago de Chile in 1941. He has done deep research and great work in the field of biophysics, specifically in the study of ion channels. He was part of a select group of scientists (such as Mario Luxoro, Eduardo Rojas, María Cecilia Hidalgo, among us others) who worked in the Montemar laboratory where very revolutionary and surprising findings were made in the field of molecular physiology. He is one of the most cited Chilean scientists in research worldwide and was the first to demonstrate the existence of so-called "ion channels" that led him to discover that women are protected against heart disease due to their cellular composition.

I have deep admiration for him not only for his studies in ionic channels that I am currently studying in my career but also for his vocation, love, and dedication to science, leaving his mark in Chile through teaching and founding different centers for Scientific Studies always seeking to promote decentralization and the advancement of science in Chile.

I will be back with another blog soon, goodbye.
